 This Gandhi Jayanti, people in the city are paying tribute to the father of the nation by watching his principles in action in the most popular movie of the day, Lage Raho Munnabhai. People will give a miss to dull ceremonies and dry speeches in favour of revisiting Gandhiji's principles in what many feel is a less heavy-handed and more meaningful way. Theatres like Prasads, Venkatramana, Sairaja and Sangeet who are screening the movie have been bombarded with calls for bookings. Prasads is booked solid for the weekend, despite the fact that the movie has already been running houseful for the past five weeks. "We cannot accommodate the special requests for afternoon shows. Keeping in mind the long weekend and Gandhi Jayanti, we have four shows. For the last two weeks, we had only two shows, but we added shows keeping in mind Oct 2," says Kris Kishan, manager Marketing, Prasads. Theatres are seeing a lot of family bookings and bulk bookings from the BPO sector. In fact, Mr Kishan notes that some parents were willing to bid for tickets at the counter after seeing the mad rush and even parents with young kids were ready to take tickets for late night shows. Friends who have put off seeing the movie for one reason or another feel that Gandhi Jayanti is the best time to catch it. Kavindra Saharia and his friends, who just finished their first term exams booked their tickets two weeks ago. "We can now afford to devote the time to laugh and yet carry home a message. The movie is relevant because it shows how Gandhiji deals with modern day problems. My friend, Prathapratim Deka from IIT Rourkee has come down to Hyderabad especially to watch the movie with us. We are going to the late night show on Sunday, so that we can wish people in the theatre at the stroke of midnight," says Kavindra, a management student at ICFAI. N. Shankar, a father and software consultant working with Net Solutions, hopes his daughter will absorb Gandhi's message more effectively by watching this movie. "Children these days need it. They adopt so much from movies and while they watch and laugh, somewhere the good messages will sink in." He plans to take his daughter, niece and nephews to the film. With so many people having the same plan on Gandhi Jayanti, it is no wonder some are being forced to travel long distances to catch a show. But this doesn't bother Navruz, a call centre executive at GE Capitals. "We live at Shankarpally and we booked tickets at Venkatramana in Kachiguda as we failed to get tickets everywhere else. But we decided that we would watch the movie, no matter what," he says. No doubt, this Gandhi Jayanti, everyone seems to be saying Lage Raho…] Stars to go on padyatra: While everyone in Hyderabad watches Munna, Circuit and Surana today, we decided to find out what they would be doing. It seems a lot of the stars of Lage Raho will be participating in a huge padyatra in Mumbai in honour of Gandhi Jayanti. Boman Irani, sadly, won't be one of them. He said ruefully, "Unfortunately I am stuck in Australia so I won't be able to take part in the padyatra. The movie has definitely brought about a revolution and this itself is a big leap. There is more awareness now about civic and social causes. Of course, we do not need a freedom struggle now, but at the same time we cannot abuse the freedom we got after paying such a huge price." But Circuit will definitely be there. Arshad Warsi, who just got back from a family holiday, is all set to take part in the march. According to his wife Maria Gorretti, though the family is recovering from jet lag, Arshad will be at the padyatra to raise awareness of the importance of Gandhian principles. "After that, Arshad will go to a special screening of the movie that is just for kids," said Maria. | ||||||
