//Dil Se Desi// Car Colours

Human beings may have different moods everyday, but the persona remains constant. Similarly, in case of the colour choice, they may have several preferences, but the favourite remains constant.

The favourite colour of an individual reflects the nature and type that she is. Similarly, the colour of the vehicle that one drives solely depends upon the kind of person the owner is! We decided to do a little dipstick to know which are the most preferred colours favoured by Indian buyers across different car models and segments.

Based on customers' preferences for certain colours (and shades) among the best-selling car models, the following emerged to be the Top 5 among the most preferred. There weren't too many surprises, but it is clear that India is just not a `bold colour country'.

Silver

All that glitters may not be gold, but at least in cars, silver not only outshines the yellow metal, it is also the bestseller across a number of car models.

Indians seem to be mad about silver these days. Bright and jazzy silver may be the colour of youngsters' accessories just as the bright or silky silver is the colour of their dad's car. The elegance along with simplicity projected by this colour makes its owner feel honoured. The clear evidence is the spark that one can notice in the onlookers' eyes.

In our-best selling colours list for Indian cars, silver takes the numero uno spot even as it imparts a shimmer to the face of both the buyer and the seller alike.

While bright silver and silky silver are the colours that Hyundai and Maruti buyers prefer respectively, it is the new warm silver and silver metallic that sells most when it comes to fancier cars of Honda and Toyota. Variants of silver all, nonetheless!

If we go by figures, each dealer of Toyota is selling almost 600 silver cars a month. Just remember Toyota is not even the volume seller in the Indian auto mart!

Beige

Beige signifies a simple man's colour. It's earthy, it's classic and it's soothing, just ideal for a sub-tropical country like India. The softness and melancholy reflected by this colour makes it the No. 2 choice of Indian auto buyers.

In industry jargon, it is popularly referred to as Real Earth or Grace Beige, mostly in cars like Santro Xing and Getz from Hyundai.

With shades of beige combined or clubbed with other similar shades, there are cars such as Mahindra and Mahindra's Scorpio (diamond white), Ford Fiesta (platinum), Honda CR-V (opal beige metallic), Toyota Corolla, Camry and Innova (beige mica metallic), Maruti Alto, Zen and Wagon R (pearl silver) that are selling like hot cakes across the country.

Black

Black, the strong and powerful colour, secures the third place in the rankings. Surprisingly, it scores a notch above the universally and perennially hot selling 'white' that had been ruling the four-wheel industry for more than a decade.

On the face of it, black may signify the colour of the devil and of deadly enthusiasm in youngsters to reach a new high, but black is a much favoured colour across small to large cars and across age spectrums.

One can check out the ultimate black cars around in models like Maruti Alto and Wagon R (midnight black), Swift (metallic midnight black), Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. In the new Honda City ZX, the colour is popularly known as Night hawk and Night hawk black pearl in the best-selling SUV of Honda CR-V.

Of course, the black has been an all-time favourite of the rich and the famous when it comes to the luxurious cars like Rolls Royce and Mercedes which still the most in this colour.

White

White is the most universal colour. The colour of peace lovers and sometimes rather unkindly referred to as the colour of the sedentary, colourless people. Also the colour of the most stolen car until recently: the Maruti 800 White (because it can be easily stolen and parked anywhere after a quick repaint).

But this doesn't necessarily mean that celebrities and wanna-be celebrities (read P3P!) keep away from white coloured cars. White remains an evergreen colour, and will probably never be out of fashion, just like the white apparel. An elegant colour that is also available at slightly lesser rates than others (except black).

Sold the maximum (and visible on the roads) in cars like Wagon R (superior white), Toyota Corolla (pearl white), Toyota Camry (super white) and Honda City (tafeta white).

Red

Give me red! That's should be the ever ready punch line for the hot, sensual and excited people all around us on Indian streets. Red may come across as too bold for certain cars, but who cares!

A number of fast and furious boys prefer buying their Accents, Swifts and Lancers in bright red. One can also find a number of Altos moving around in wine red or bright red. Paprika red is the colour of Ford Fiesta fans and dark red mica metallic goes for MUV Innova from Toyota.

From Honda's stable, Honda city looks best in its royal ruby red, though the colour is not one of its best-sellers. Black or red may not be the most suited for the hot Indian conditions, but who cares! Red is still preferred over the blues and grays, especially on the Delhi and Mumbai city roads.
