Don't let erratic weather wear down your skin

By Cory Walia

At this time of the year — the transition period between seasons — the skin gets affected by the changes in the weather.

During the period when the mercurial readings begin to fluctuate, the skin becomes very dry as it has to face the cold harsh winds and the scorching sun at the same time. Even those with oily and normal skin face the onslaught. Skin becomes dry, with rough patches showing on the corners of the mouth and the upper lip and at times the cheeks turn reddish brown too.

Since we are in the period between monsoon and winter, it's advisable to take extra care of your skin, so that it glows with radiance. Here are a few tips that will help you keep your glow:

* Moisturise the skin on a daily basis. Feed it with a vitamin E enriched moisturiser after bath, during the day, and most importantly before going to bed. It would also do you a lot of good to use a vitamin B enriched cream. Cotaryl cream is ideal for people with dry skin. It soothes the skin and nourishes it.

* Scrubbing the skin to free it of dead cells is as important as moisturising it. A lot of almond and apricot based scrubs are available in the market. You can use these to remove the grime and dead skin. However, make sure the granules are very fine and don't scar the skin.

* Chapped lips can be easily treated with petroleum jelly or milk cream. Ghee, which is usually available in the kitchen works like magic when it comes to chapped lips. Just take a drop and massage it gently into your lips. Chapping of lips is the most common problem faced during the transition period. Therefore pamper them with lip balms and moisturisers.

* Massage the hands, legs and other parts of the body with a good skin lotion. Almond oil based lotions are good and they moisturise the skin too. Apply it immediately after bath, when the skin is still moist. This way it gets absorbed better. Make sure you rub a sunscreen before stepping out.

* At times, the nail cuticles become hard, sensitive and painful to touch. To counter the problem, you can massage your hands, especially the fingertips and nails with almond oil or vitamin E enriched oil. This will nourish the cuticles and shield them against the squally weather. Neroli oil derived from orange plants makes for a wonderful hand lotion.

* Cover your feet well. Wear cotton socks and massage your feet with petroleum jelly before going to bed to avoid soreness or skin hardening on the sides. Wash your feet thoroughly before you massage them.

Hydrate your skin:

Remember that moisturising the skin or applying creams or essential beauty oils is only a part of skin care. Apart from this it is also essential that you keep yourself hydrated by drinking at least 10 to 14 glasses of water every day, to flush out the toxins. Women require more water when compared to men.

Those who suffer from water retention problems should consume less sodium and sugar. They can drink herbal teas, juices and other fluids to meet their body's water requirements. People with oily skin should opt for water based products and people with dry skin, should go for oil based products
