well Quite a serious topic, This is clear issue of data theft.
 
yes, your employer can sue you & file a case. If its a big company then surely they can take action against you.
 
It was your mistake of doing such work. Recently there were such cases in Kolkatta & delhi..
 
I already work in the field of Cyber Laws so I am telling you. You may feel bad due to my talk but thats fact & thats cyber laws, No person has any rights to take working details of a company in which you are working.

Never ever think of taking away data from your employer, Even if you are not planning to sale it, it is always suspected that you might sale it & which will put u behind bars

Recently this company close thr operation from India & me n mine other collegues take this data (phone numbers & mail ids along with us in pendrive).
